Some of you might have read the Edda by Snorri Sturluson, which is a collection of different individual myths about norse gods (i. e. norse myths about european gods). Snorri was one of our European ancestors and a pagan. I am also a European and a pagan and my ancestors still live within me, so I decided to write a completely new myth for the norse mythology. This myth is called “Loki’s Magic” and I will share it here with everyone who wants to read it.
To quote another European pagan: “Nothing should ever be read without background music, so here you go:”
Once, Thor went with Loki on a travel to Utgard to fight against giants. They had to pass Midgard, where they rested at night. When Thor woke up in the next morning, he could not find Loki anywhere. He sought him, but he did not find him. Thor thought that Loki had cowardly fled to Asgard. But he, Thor, the slayer of giants, did not fear anything in the world and so he went alone to Utgard.
Loki had not fled to Asgard. He turned his appearance into that of a little stone, so that Thor could not find him and when Thor went on to Utgard, he turned back to his normal appearance and went to the humans. He gave them some of his divine power and tought them how to use his magic. With Loki’s power they caused various curious things. They produced candles that did not need wax or fire, but nevertheless gave light. They built carriages that did not need horses and ships that could fly. They produced weapons similar to crossbows, only that they were much faster and deadlier. This made swords, shields and armour unnecessary. The produced machines with which they could talk to each other over thousands of miles without needing to send letters. They brewed potions and invented medicine that could heal almost all illnesses. However they also invented new deadly poisons and more horrible substances that did not kill immediatelly, but made spirit and body addicted to them. In this way they killed body and spirit within a long and slowly torture that could have lasted for years and in most of the cases the spirit was dead long before the body was. Finally they even invented machines that thought for them and that could keep a mass of information, so that libraries and books became unnecessary.
They praised Loki for his present because they did not see the deceit behind Loki’s deeds. The god reached what he wanted to reach. The humans became addicted to him, they became his slaves. They became weak, lazy and dumb. Quality did not count anymore for them, only quantity. There number increased that much, there were 20,000 times as many humans as there were originally. They mutually took place and food from each other and they felled almost every forest of the world. They did not know anymore, how to make fire with their own hands. They did not know anymore how to tame wild horses, or even how to ride on already tamed horses. They could walk only short distances by foot. The warriors did not have swords and shields anymore, but had to rely on their firearms. The healers became poisoners, they earned their daily bread with healing people from illnesses and therefore they had to make sure there were enough ill people. They sold medicine that healed the people from the illnesses they had and at the same time made sure the illness would come back after a while.
All this was not unseen by the gods in Asgard and their wrath was not little. They decided to end this and went to a thing. There they decided that Thor, Baldr, Heimdallr and Vidar should go to Midgard and fulfill this task. The four gods rode across the rainbow bridge Bifröst, of which Heimdallr was the master, straight to Midgard. Normally Bifröst was only visible to the humans in the far north and only sometimes, but on this day Bifröst could be seen from whole Midgard. When Baldr, the shiny sun god, saw the extent of Loki’s work with his own eyes, he became angry and burned all metal on Midgard, in which Loki transfered his magic, with the fire of the sun. Thor helped him to spread the flames with raising a storm that spread the flames everywhere. These flames destroyed Loki’s magic and they raged for half a year. After they calmed down, most of the humans had died. The ones that survived were the ones that still could imagine living without Loki’s magic and who had little problems in giving it up. They trusted in their own power instead of Loki’s magic and therefore their own power was enough to survive. Vidar planted new forests and Thor hunted for Loki and found him and finally brought him back to Asgard. Loki was again there, where he belongs to, he was at Thor – the lightning served the thunder again and not the humans.
It took time, but finally the world found back to its old order.
